The sphinx basks in the radiance of the great pyramid (Khufu’s Pyramid). It is impossible to describe the scale of these wonders. We were dwarfed by their presence.
And here we are inside the theRed Pyramid at Dahshur. We were able to go into the burial chamber. I never thought that I would have the opportunity for this particular adventure! But here I am with David and son Jeremy, in Egypt, inside a pyramid, in the Land of the Pharaohs. Guess we are not in Kansas anymore…
A glimpse of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina which is a commemoration of the Library of Alexandria that was lost in antiquity. Quite an impressive site on the Meditertanean Sea in Alexandria. We not only visited this modern gem, but also visited the ancient catacombs that crisscross the city.
The Cecil Hotel in Alexandria has hosted such luminaries as Winston Churchill and Somerset Maugham. It was also featured in Lawrence Durrell’s Alexandria Quartet. I had to pop in and soak up the ambiance. Loved the four novels of Durrell and could not resist uniting fiction and history! This is where travel and my flytes of fancy take me….right into books-read, pictures-seen and thoughts-not spoken.
I believe that this lonely synagogue in Cairo is thought to be the place where Joseph and Mary took their infant son while in exile. Again, I marvel at the integration of the past and the present in my small conciousness. Bible stories, epic movies, great literature all come to life for me in this ancient cradle of civilization. Travel takes us all beyond boundaries, both physical and those unseen places of the mind and spirit.
We're Montie and David, and we are always looking for an adventure. I am the writer and David the photographer. Because of this division of labor you will see me in more pictures than him, and probably because I am the one making the decisions about what to print and what to write. That being said, I could not do this without his great skill and vision. The photos you see in the section above are samples of some of our adventures which include the random weekend fancy and our many planned excursions all over the world. I hope to be blogging about them all as we go along. See more of David's great photos by following him on Instagram at ravinslavin.
